The Elder Science & Technology Museum of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has opened its new area devoted to research and science in the Canary Islands on last 13 July. Within the new permanent exhibition, SITMA represents one of the institutional initiatives of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, more precisely the one focused on robotics and sensorics applied to Oceanography.
The space allocated to SITMA is dominated by a real out-of-service underwater glider donated by Teledyne Webb Research. Beneath the robot, an informative board explains SITMA´s activity, the functioning of a glider in the sea and the participation of ULPGC´s researchers in several important oceanographic missions carried out with this type of vehicles.
